March 31st is an important date in the water industry calendar and is probably our busiest time of the year when making claims against water companies for reduced charges and rebates on water bills in particular reduction in fixed tariff charges such as: - Surface water band charges levied by – Severn Trent Water, South Staffordshire Water, United Utilities, Welsh Water, Yorkshire Water and Northumbrian Water.
This charge is for collection, conveyance, treatment and disposal of rainwater that’s falls onto a property, the larger the site surface water the higher the charge and dependant on the category of claim to reduce this charge the claim and supporting documentation must be submitted before 31st March as any claims after this date the clients potential refund could be reduced as some water companies only refund back the last financial year and the cost to you the client could be substantial.

Emissions Increase as Economy Improves
Figures showing a 4% increase in Scotland's carbon footprint between 2009 and 2010 are being described as "deeply worrying" by Scottish Green MSPs.
From 1998, the footprint rose by 15% to a peak of 101.1 million tonnes carbon dioxide equivalent (MtCO2e) in 2007 before falling to 78.7 MtCO2e in 2009.
In 2010, Scotland's carbon footprint was 82.2 MtCO2e, 6% less than in 1998 (87.9 MtCO2e) but a significant rise on the previous year.
The footprint of 82.2 MtCO2e includes emissions associated with goods and services bought in as well as those generated in the country.
Imports, due to a lack of manufacturing, are cited as the reason behind the increase, and there has been a 5% rise in emissions from private motoring since 1998.
Green MSP for Glasgow and co-convener of the Scottish Greens, Patrick Harvie, said that it is "deeply worrying" that Scotland's carbon footprint has "returned to an upward trajectory", citing changes to Government policy as a possible solution to the issue
Harvie said: "It appears to bear out our prediction that without real policy change, the reductions which were caused by the recession would be wiped out, and that emissions would rebound as the economic recovery began.
"Scotland is currently missing the opportunity to build a more equal, more sustainable and more resilient economy, which meets people's needs without destroying the environmental conditions we depend upon. Just a few short years after passing the Climate Change Act, we're falling ever further behind our own targets," he added.
MSPs have said the increase is a particular concern as it follows a 19% fall in the country's carbon footprint in 2009.

No more roll-overs from SSE - April 2014
SSE has confirmed it will end automatic contract rollovers for small businesses from April 2014. Whilst this is a welcome move by SSE, parent company of Scottish Hydro, Southern Energy and Swalec, it is a shame this hasn't happened sooner.
The company's decision follows those made by British Gas and RWE npower to end the process.
SSE said it would also, from 2014, extend its existing micro-business back-billing commitment to cover small businesses – this means they will not be back-billed beyond 12 months, where SSE's error has led to underpayment.

TPI Regulations considered
A consultation exploring issues relating to Third Party Intermediaries (TPIs) in both the non-domestic and domestic energy markets was launched by Ofgem on 28 June.
The regulator expects the importance of TPIs in the GB retail energy market to increase given the introduction of smart meters and grids, along with increasing focus on energy efficiency. But following concerns over the practices of TPIs across the retail market, Ofgem is considering a spectrum of options for the development of a new overarching regulatory framework.
Options range from non-binding guidance on the regulator's expectations for TPI interactions with consumers to direct regulation of TPIs. The regulator's current view is that the definition of TPIs should not include charitable organisations, advice agencies and not for profit organisations such as Consumer Futures and Citizens Advice Consumer Service.

Demanding Demand Response
So you have decided to enroll your facility in a demand response program. You understand that your organization will be protecting the electric grid from blackouts and brownouts during times of high demand, and you are aware of the revenue your organization will earn from this program. The only thing left to do is to work with your demand response provider and develop a successful reduction strategy to implement during an emergency event. Although each organization is different and will require a tailored plan, there are eight main strategies that prove to be effective for most facilities.

Energy Storage powering Up
One of the biggest concerns with many forms of renewable energy is their inability to store active energy during times when the sun isn't out, or when the wind isn't blowing. With these energies gaining popularity and growing at an impressive rate, it seems as though establishing an efficient form of energy storage is a foregone conclusion for the future.

CRC must be retained, say Energy Managers Association
The Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) Energy Efficiency Scheme and its fiscal contribution to the Treasury needs to be retained despite flaws in the scheme's design, the Energy Managers Association (EMA) has said.
The EMA, which represents energy management professionals from companies with a collective energy spend of around £3bn, issued a report on Monday 15 April that examined attitudes within the field of energy and carbon management to the CRC and carbon reporting.
The Mandatory Green House Gas Reporting and CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme report claimed the CRC has successfully motivated organisations on the need to reduce carbon emissions, which would not have occurred without the scheme. But the organisation said the government must ensure there is a clear separation between carbon taxes and carbon reporting to simplify the landscape and provide consistency to businesses.

Energy policies push up business bills
The UK's energy and climate change policies will help cushion domestic consumers from price rises. But they will lead to an increase in average bills for businesses, a new government report has concluded.
According to the report, published on 27 March, medium-sized energy users currently face bills that are already 21% higher, than would otherwise be the case, as a result of government policies. This is expected to increase in future years.
Energy-intensive users' energy costs were said to be up to 14% higher than otherwise would be as a result of policies, and this could increase to 36% by the end of the decade - largely because of the impact of the UK carbon floor price, which came into force on 1 April this year, and the EU Emissions Trading Scheme.

Business energy in spotlight as Ofgem tightens protections
New rules for the treatment of businesses by gas and electricity suppliers have been put forward for consultation by Ofgem.
The regulator issued its final proposals for reforms to aid businesses on 22 March, following the outcome of its Retail Market Reform investigation published in March 2011.
The key elements include extending existing licence conditions that protect micro-businesses by amending the definition. The regulator is also proposing to mandate suppliers to ensure micro-business energy bills contain contract end dates, and allow businesses to terminate their contracts at any time. Binding standards of conduct that focus on suppliers' dealings with small business are also set to be introduced.

Budget 2013 - An Energy Budget?
With the budget just a couple of days, thoughts are turning to whether the government will take the chance to improve the UK's energy situation.
A poll by the Express - http://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/385203/Budget-2013-Brits-call-on-George-Osborne-to-cap-rising-energy-and-gas-prices - lists freezing/reducing energy bills as a top priority.
However unless there is increased actual investment generating capacity, then energy prices will continue to rise for both residential and commercial customers.

Grid Scale Energy Storage - missing an opportunity?
Grid Scale Energy Storage is predicted to be a £100 Billion global industry by 2015.
Energy Storage helps businesses, the economy and the environment.
Hopefully with all of this potential the government and our energy suppliers will invest the time and money required to meet our storage needs now and in the future.
Energy Storage helps businesses, the economy and the environment.
- Storing electricity reduces costs, by storing energy generated off peak and selling during times of very high demand, the average cost of energy is reduced.
- Green technologies like Solar, Wind and Tidal don't produce power when it is required. Large Scale Storage make these technologies far more viable.
- Reducing the demand for energy generation at peak times means that the most inefficient generators won't need to be used. These generators produce the most emissions per megawatt.
- Grid Scale Storage is a truly global industry, suppliers will have opportunities almost everywhere. The potential to export knowledge, products and service is huge.
Hopefully with all of this potential the government and our energy suppliers will invest the time and money required to meet our storage needs now and in the future.

The Green Book - good for the environment, bad for business
The Green Book: New Directions for Liberals in Government (http://www.green-book.org.uk) brings together 27 leading Liberal Democrats and sympathetic experts to propose radical and innovative new directions for the Liberal Democrats.
Although the full book is not available yet, the introduction and chapters give strong clues as the direction. More "Green" taxes, hard targets for manufacturers and a reliance on community based generation and importing electricity from our European partners.
Unfortunately for businesses, this reads as higher costs. Distributed, community generation schemes are not efficient, and will require backup sources to meet the peaks of daily demand. Importing electricity just moved the pollution to another country. Great for emissions targets, but higher energy losses equal higher prices.
Energy storage is the biggest issue for Green energy, and one which hold great financial rewards, unfortunately it does seem to deserve a chapter.
